Kehinde Wiley, the artist chosen to paint the official portraitof former US President Barack Obama, previously depicted black women decapitating white women.

Wiley, who is 39 and from New York, created the two paintings in 2012 and was inspired by the Biblical story of Judith beheading the Assyrian general Holoferne. At the time, Wiley told The New York Times that he was inspired by the classical European depictions of Bible stories by Caravaggio and Gentileschi, only he chose to depict Judith as a black woman and Holoferne as a white woman. He commented: “It’s sort of a play on the ‘kill whitey’ thing”.

The portraits were part of an exhibition in which his paintings only depicted women, rather than the young African-American men he would scout on the street and depict in poses seen in classical European artwork. The sitter for Judith was Triesha Lowe, a stay-at-home mother whom Wiley discovered in a Brooklyn shopping centre.

The description for the work from the North Carolina Museum of Art foundation reads: “Wiley translates this image of a courageous, powerful woman into a contemporary version that resonates with fury and righteousness.”

Wiley's portrait of Obama will hang in the US National Portrait Gallery. It has already sparked conversation and criticism, but the sitter himself appeared pleased with his likeness, adding that Wiley's work “challenged our conventional views of power and privilege.”

  3. It's a popular theme. People need to chill.

There's more fucked up shit in Titus Andronicus than in all of Tarantino's films put together and nobody suggests we get rid of him, well, except SJWs.

It makes me happy people will continue to tard rage about it for potentially hundreds or even thousands of years. There may be some sperg in the year 4000 still freaking out about it.

  4. "Modern Artists" wouldn't know a damn thing about power over anything in their lives, they're always "oppressed" by something and never act to improve their quality of life.

EDIT for context: I'm not saying this in the general scope, but a loud subset that poorly represent the whole. My bad if I came across as shitty.

  5. I don't know, becoming an artist who does a Presidential portrait that will be remembered for thousands of years is pretty much improving your life.

Say what you like about murrica but any of our Presidents are going to be remembered thousands of years from now much like we remember Roman emperors.

If you did a portrait of one, you're immortal too, at least in human terms.

  6. You realize "New York judge" is a synonym for "mongoloid" right?

This is like Dadaists suing after they handed out axes at one of their displays and someone used one.

  8. That Judith thing needs to die; now that every other female/shemale "artist" has done it, the worst it can elicit is a yawn.

The Sperm thing has been used more provocatively by Munch.

I'm not surprised that "political" artists are so bereft of inspiration: who needs inspiration when you can have talking point and "optics"?

  13. What the hell are they crying about, the building was getting torn down one way or another. Why does it matter that it was painted over a week before demolition?

  17. I mean, there are really beautiful works of art that people do on the sides of buildings, but, two points to make here:

    1. Graffiti is an impermanent art form. The fact that it exists for a short time, then gets painted over (either by the owner, or by another artist) is part of the ethos, I think.

    2. The article made it seem like most people were mad that it was painted over prior to demolition. They seem less mad that the building was torn down period than over the "disrespect" that whitewashing prior to teardown apparently represents.

In any case it's just dumbasses sperging. How are you going to award damages to a group of, legally speaking, vandals who are mad that their vandalism was destroyed?
